Solarizarion is a common practice used by market gardeners to control weeds organically. The clear plastic will trap the sun’s heat and “cook” the weeds underneath. It will also increase decomposition and microbial activity, turning those weeds into fertilizer for the coming cash crops. This is often done in a series of applying and removing the tarps a couple times. When the tarps are removed, new weeds will emerge and then the tarp is reapplied, killing those new weeds.
