Residents are reporting mixed experiences with Philly’s twice-weekly trash pickup pilot. Four months into the program, some say the extra day has made a noticeable improvement. Others see the difference as marginal at best, and sometimes, even contributing to more trash spilling out onto the street and sidewalk. Inconsistency is another issue. For the record: Residents should see a second trash pickup three days after their standard day (excluding Sundays and city holiday weeks). We checked out

Many of Philly’s alleys are plagued by trash, overgrown trees, roots, and even illegal gates. Keeping them clean and clear is a big job. We tagged along with the city’s Future Track alley cleaning program, which hires and trains at-risk young adults for public service work. So far this year, they have cleaned 2,000 alleys. Philly, we’ve all seen what’s happening in Minneapolis. And many of you have taken to the streets in protest of the tactics ICE is using to deport undocumented immigrants — especially in the aftermath of the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Some of you are calling on our state and local government to protect Philadelphia and its nearly 76,000 undocumented immigrants from ICE – two Philadelphia City Councilmembers are answering the call. Inside the FBI’s hunt for a Philly armored truck-heist crew. Old-school detective work. High-tech surveillance. An anonymous tip. Even a totally separate car-theft probe. All of it helped investigators piece together the case — including a surprising text about a Fox 29 post that came from a West Philly man now playing in the NFL. Inquirer investigative reporter David Gambacorta joins Ariane Datil at the Wooder Cooler to break down what we know about the robbery ring, people in their orbit, and

When Alba Martinez first came to Philly, in 1985, she encountered the kind of heartbreak that speaks to the human experience: She felt like she was drowning of loneliness in an ocean of people. The Puerto Rico native found community through SEPTA’s Route 47 bus, and her story was told in a 2022 film named after the route. Three years later, "La Guagua 47" — guagua is a word for “bus” in Puerto Rican Spanish — is turning into a musical, with a 32-foot float and two of the songs from the forthcomi

Former Philly police Officer Mark Dial was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the deadly 2023 shooting of Eddie Irizarry. The jury found Dial acted unreasonably and recklessly when he shot Irizarry six times through his car window in Kensington. Dial was acquitted of the more serious charge of third-degree murder. Prosecutors asked that his bail be revoked and that he be held in custody ahead of his July sentencing. Common Pleas Court Judge Glenn B. Bronson denied the request, saying Dial wa

You’ve almost certainly noticed all the new construction happening in Philly right now. Developers have built a ton of new apartments recently. In some areas, they still look pretty empty. It makes you wonder: Are there enough people moving here to actually fill them? Most experts say yes — just not immediately. We unpack exactly what’s happening here: https://www.inquirer.com/real-estate/housing/philadelphia-apartment-rental-new-lease-concessions-20240806.html 📝 by Jake Blumgart and Ryan W. Br

In his first year as top cop, Philly Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel has had change in mind — more than 300 changes, actually. That’s how many to-do items were on the list he made at the start of his tenure as head of a long-challenged police department. “I want to shake it up. I want to try different things,” Bethel, who oversees 5,600 officers and a $900 million annual budget, told The Inquirer. “And so I’m pushing the department probably harder than they’ve had in a long time.” Still, change

History was made on South Street last week. Philly’s first queer women’s sports bar, Marsha’s, opened its doors — and the line wrapped around the block. From tears at the ribbon cutting to cheers at the bar, owner Chivonn Anderson built more than a space — she built a legacy. A place to watch women’s sports, connect, and celebrate community. South Street is officially home to something Philly has been waiting for. 📹 by Ariane Datil / Staff | Philadelphia Inquirer

Heads up, Philly renters! We’ve got good news. Two City Council bills aimed a reducing up-front moving costs have officially taken effect. The bills cap rental application fees and allow renters to pay security deposits in installments. “The goal was to address the unaffordability of moving in for so many tenants in Philadelphia,” said City Councilmember Rue Landau, who introduced the legislation. “Rents have gone up tremendously, and people’s incomes have not.” Details: https://www.inquirer.com

The strife continues at the World Cafe Live, the West Philly venue that has been wracked with labor unrest since workers walked out during a Suzanne Vega concert earlier this month in protest of what they said was “unfair treatment” under the management team of new CEO Joseph Callahan. Last week, in an interview with The Inquirer, Callahan, a Northeast Philly native who made headlines last year by bringing the Portal to the city, said he was working to get the nonprofit venue out of debt and on
