So when you aren't talking into the mic, it should essentially kill the mic signal until you talk again. Voice Meter Banana has a simple Gate you can use. It also has a compressor with will "thicken" your sound as well.

In Windows 10 the control is integrated right into the icon's fly-out - look for an "arrow shape" (chevron) at the top to the side of the audio source listed and you should get a menu which allows you to choose a different output source.
