They did an excellent job IMHO..never had any settling, cracking, foundation problems in the 14 years I lived in it and I was east of I-35 with the heavy clay.

If the beam is made up of three 2x joists laminated together, then it is actually about 4.5" wide, so a 6x6 post would work (since it is about 5.5"x5.5". The post can always be larger than the beam, just not smaller.
