Climate change was a major factor behind the hot, dry weather that gave rise to the devastating LA fires, a scientific study has confirmed. It made those weather conditions about 35% more likely, according to World Weather Attribution - globally recognised for their studies linking extreme weather to climate change.

Global warming exacerbated fire conditions in the Los Angeles area, an analysis by the research group World Weather Attribution finds.

An international panel of scientists says with "high confidence" that climate change is worsening Southern California's fire threat.

Hughes Fire initially started 10:53 a.m. Jan. 22 in Los Angeles County. It has burned 10,425 acres after being active for six days. By Tuesday morning, the fire crew succeeded in containing 98% of the wildfire. The cause is, however, still being investigated.

Firefighters made progress on the more than 10,000-acre Hughes Fire Friday, which sent thousands fleeing after sparking near the Los Angeles County community of Castaic a day earlier.

At least 29 people are believed to be dead and more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for as multiple wildfires rage across Southern California.
