A 608-pound bluefin tuna sold for $1.3 million (207 million yen) at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on Sunday, making it the second-most expensive tuna sold at Japan’s premiere wholesale fish markets since record-keeping began in 1999.

The bid was around 1.8 times higher than last year's, and second only in price to 2019's top catch, which sold for ¥333.6 million.

A bluefin tuna about the size of a motorcycle has been sold for $1.3 million (207 million yen) at Japan’s most prestigious fish market, setting the second highest price on record during its new year auction.

The Onodera Group, which includes Michelin-starred sushi restaurateurs, paid 207m yen for the 276-kilo bluefin tuna. This is the second-highest price ever paid at the annual New Year auction.
