An Alabama elementary school student and twin girls from Dallas are among the more than 100 people who have died in the flash floods that rushed through central Texas.

"Camp Mystic is grieving the loss of 27 campers and counselors following the catastrophic flooding on the Guadalupe River," the camp said in a statement.

Texas Hill Country, where much of the flooding took place this time, is often referred to as “flash flood alley.” It's home to steep terrain and a lack of vegetation that creates a perfect storm for waters to rise quickly.

At least 104 people, including more than two dozen children, died in the torrential downpour. Others remained unaccounted for.

Local officials have asked for financial donations, while the Salvation Army and World Central Kitchen are providing support on the ground.
