While the rain isn't on track, the snowfall is looking better. To date, as of Nov. 12, 2024, the Central Sierra Snow Lab has recorded 13.58 inches of snow since Oct. 1. The median snowfall total is 15.65", behind just over 2 inches at 2.07" from normal.

In the northern hemisphere, atmospheric rivers typically occur during winter and are often cited for strong storms in the West. According to NASA, they are the largest transport mechanisms of fresh water on Earth.

Another potent Pacific storm system is bringing strong winds, heavy rains and even a slight potential for severe storms to parts of the Northwest.
