A combination of high winds, dry air and above average temperatures caused a wildfire in the Grand Canyon to rapidly expand and cause major damage.
The Dragon Bravo Fire continues to damage Arizona's crown jewel, the Grand Canyon, as wildfires in the Southwest persist. As of Wednesday, the Gothic Fire in Nevada was 30,786 acres and 10% contained.
The fast-moving fire destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of other structures in the Grand Canyon National Park.
Highway closures and evacuations remain in effect as a wildfire burns more than 51,000 acres in far northern Coconino County. It is one of two blazes raging at or near the northern rim of the Grand Canyon.
Look for a high of 107 in the Valley today, with westerly winds picking up a bit this evening. Winds from 10 to 20 mph may gust to 30 mph. Strong storms are possible in southern and southeastern Arizona today, which could push some wind and blowing dust into the Valley this evening. There’s also a 20% chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Six tornadoes were reported from Wisconsin to Indiana on Wednesday, with the Wisconsin ones labeled as “large,” though no major damage or injuries have been reported.
As of Monday, the Dragon Bravo fire on the North Rim had consumed more than 5,700 acres and was not contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
