A Mississippi man died Monday morning when a malfunction caused hot asphalt from a dump truck to fall on top of him.

Darrell Sheriff was underneath a dump truck working on a hydraulic line when the tailgate opened and asphalt fell on him, Jackson police said.

"It appears to be an accidental death at this particular time," Jackson Police Department said of the Monday, Nov. 4 tragedy

"It appeared to be some type of malfunction with his dump truck," Wade said, adding it was a "horrific situation."
