Hussaini, will oversee the plans to open the million-dollar Ismaili Muslim community hub after his father's recent passing.

Prince Karim, 88, was given the title of “His Highness” by Queen Elizabeth in July 1957, two weeks after his grandfather, the Aga Khan III, unexpectedly made him heir to the family’s 1,300-year dynasty as leader of the Ismaili Muslim sect.

Hussaini, Aga Khan IV ends an illustrious and transformative 49th Imamat, the office of spiritual leadership of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims.

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, was laid to rest in Aswan, Egypt, on Sunday during a private ceremony. His death, which was announced on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88, has left the global Ismaili Muslim community in mourning. He was laid to rest in Aswan in accordance with his last wish.

Hussaini, the Aga Khan IV and 49th Imam of Nizari Ismaili Muslims, died February 4. He was 88. The Aga Khan’s eldest son, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini, has been designated the Aga Khan V.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos were among the dignitaries who attended Saturday’s private ceremony for His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini at the Ismaili community center. Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the mayor of Lisbon were also among the mourners.

The honor Uganda bestowed on the Aga Khan was in appreciation that, even when it was easier to close shop and leave, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (Akfed) rode the wave of uncertainty and kept faith in Uganda’s potential, setting up investments that global multinationals did not fancy, almost all these in uncharted waters.

Hussaini, or Aga Khan IV as he was better known, has led to an outpouring of tributes. The spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims, more than 80,000 of whom reside in Canada, was known for his philanthropic efforts around the globe.
