Lou Trivino’s $5 million club option has been declined by the New York Yankees, making the right-hander a free agent after he missed his second straight big league season following an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

The Yankees non-tendered Trivino last offseason and then re-signed the righty to a $1.5 million guaranteed contract with the option for 2025. They initially acquired him from the Athletics in the 2022 trade that also brought Frankie Montas to the Bronx.

On Sunday the Yankees declined their $5 million club option on Lou Trivino, who becomes a free agent. The righty reliever arrived in the 2022 trade that also brought Frankie Montas to The Bronx, and neither stayed healthy.

The Yankees announced that they declined their $5M club option on Lou Trivino’s services for the 2025 season. No buyout was attached to the option, and the 33-year-old reliever will now head to the open market.

Trivino, 33, was traded by the Athletics to the Yankees on Aug. 1, 2023, with right-hander Frankie Montas for four minor-leaguers — left-handers J.P. Sears and Ken Waldichuk, right-hander Luis Medina and second baseman Cooper Bowman.

Trivino was non-tendered last offseason after undergoing Tommy John surgery and re-signed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the $5 million club option. However, he did not end up contributing to the major-league club due to a series of setbacks.
