"Mufasa" may still be the pride of the international box office, but "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" is the new leader of the pack domestically.

With “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” (Lionsgate), Gerard Butler displayed his bona fides as one of the most reliable draws for action releases. Opening at #1 with $15.5 million, it came in a little ahead of projections and led #2 “ Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney).

Pantera topped the box office charts over the weekend with a $15.5 million debut. The total even eclipsed its predecessor’s, which netted $15.2 million at the box office upon its 2018 release—though its $40 million production budget also shot past its prequel as well.
