Barrow County schools will install weapons detection systems in all high schools following a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School, with implementation expected to begin next week at a cost of around $700,000.

The vote happened at an emergency meeting Thursday night. The board called the meeting after Barrow County School System said a student brought a gun into Apalachee High School Wednesday. That crime happened four months after the deadly shooting rampage at that school Sept. 4, 2024.

A 14-year-old student has been arrested after bringing a gun on Wednesday to Apalachee High School, the same Georgia high school where a shooting in September killed two teachers and two students and wounded others.

Following the incident, Barrow County Schools announced that school was canceled at Apalachee High School on Thursday, Jan. 9. 11Alive obtained a copy of an email sent to parents that said students and staff should not report and that Open House is postponed. All on-campus extracurricular activities are also canceled.

Colt Gray, 14, killed four people at a Apalachee High in September, cops said. Another 14-year-old brought a gun to the school Wednesday.
