The toymaker has found success in fictional films. But with “Piece by Piece,” about the life of Mr. Williams, it has gotten into a new genre.

Piece By Piece has a lot of fun with the creative liberties of the visual embellishment that takes Pharrell’s minifig deep under the sea and to the vastness of space, or turns Snoop Dogg to a LEGO dog. Even still, this collaboration between LEGO and Pharrell never completely ties together in a fully cohesive or deeply emotional way.

As far as imagination goes, Piece by Piece is visually and creatively spectacular. It marries documentary filmmaking — which is very traditional here — with a remarkable LEGO animation style. When I saw this was a documentary about Pharrell Williams,
