The European Commission – the executive arm of the European Union – has warned Apple to desist from geo-blocking activities that it calls “discriminatory”.

The European Commission said on Tuesday that along with national authorities it was calling upon Apple to stop geo-blocking practices on Apple Media Services.

Apple Inc. was notified by the European Union that its geo-blocking practices are potentially in breach of consumer protection rules, adding to the iPhone maker’s regulatory issues in the bloc.

The European Union has accused Apple of unlawfully discriminating against EU customers after finding the Cupertino company’s geo-blocking measures may be violating the bloc’s consumer protection rules.

The European Commission has informed Apple that its geo-blocking practices, where services are limited or blocked in certain geographical locations, are potentially breaking the law. These practices have been identified on the App Store, Apple Arcade, Music, iTunes Store, Books, and Podcasts.

Geo-blocking in simpler terms is the practice of restricting content on the basis of the geographical location of the user accessing it.

The European Union has directed Apple Inc. AAPL to discontinue geo-blocking on its media services.
