Donald Trump has told Ukraine to give up hopes of getting back annexed Crimea or joining NATO as he prepares to host President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday to press Kyiv into accepting a peace deal with Russia.

At what was billed as an “historic” presidential summit, hastily put together in Alaska on Friday afternoon, the optics were as clear and overshadowing as the vast Chugach mountains glistening over Anchorage in the summer sun.
Trump officials defended the president’s peace push after meeting Putin, calling progress “game-changing” ahead of Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
In Alaska, the Russian leader proposed that Ukraine hand over the remainder of the Donbas region to Moscow to stop the fighting.
Mr Trump previously pressed Mr Zelensky to acknowledge Russia's claim to Crimea as part of a US-brokered peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Mr Zelensky has remained steadfast, asserting that Ukraine will never relinquish control of the peninsula.
