Government agencies and major stock exchanges will be closed on Thursday to honor Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th U.S. president.

President Jimmy Carter will be honored with two funeral services in Washington and Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 9, before his private hometown burial in Plains. The national day of mourning will bring together all five living U.

Thursday's service will cap off six days of remembrance for Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. After the funeral, Carter will return to Georgia to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.
