The Hurricane Kirk is preparing to hit Europe in the form of a post-tropical cyclone. This is according to the models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

Parts of northwestern Europe are on alert for a significant storm system with origins in the tropical Atlantic.

Britain will be battered by heavy rain and strong winds as the tail end of Hurricane Kirk hits the country. The wet weather is expected from mid-week according to the Met Office when the remnant of the major storm it sweeps across the Atlantic towards northwest Europe.

The Met Office said the whole of England and Wales, plus southern Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland are at risk of 'disruption' from Kirk - although it is too early to issue specific warnings.

Recent weeks have seen severe flooding hit parts of the UK which turned roads into rivers and left towns and villages cut off.
