A sloppy connection will result in sloppy measurement. but the three-bolt fitting to attach them to the shoe is universal, so you can use any road shoe. (Be aware that MTB shoes are different though).

Then simply twist the shoe in the normal unlocking direction until it disengages from the pedal.
